Travel to Slovenia, new Fair country, to fight homelessness

Destinations, Friends & Partners, Social Projects Updates

Kings of the Street, the initiative you can support by organizing your travel to Slovenia on Fairbnb.coop, is a unique social project because it also gives the opportunity to take a tour and discover the country through the eyes of a homeless person.

Thanks to our key partners at FromZero and the agreement with the non-profit organization Kralji Ulice (“Kings of the Street”), we’re adding Slovenia to the Fairbnb.coop map! Every travel to Slovenia will contribute to the organization’s mission to fight homelessness in the country.

About the organization Kralji Ulice (Kings of the Street)

Kralji ulice, Association for Help and Self-Help for the Homeless, is an independent, non-governmental, non-profit humanitarian organization formally established in September 2005. They bring together experts and others concerned with homelessness and related phenomena, as well as people affected by homelessness and related social exclusion. They study homelessness, strive to prevent homelessness and improve the lives of homeless people, and write extensively on the subject.

Their vision is that there should be no place for homelessness in a modern, developed European country in the 21st century.

Their main activities/projects:

  • Kings of the Streets is a monthly street newspaper offered on Slovenian streets, mostly by homeless and others in social or economic distress. The goal is to offer people the opportunity to earn a legitimate income, helping them to reintegrate into society.
  • At their day center, they conduct numerous activities that address the needs of the homeless.
  • By working in the field, they aim to get closer to the people who don’t come to their day center.
  • Through resettlement, a low-threshold program where the city provides housing, they get people off the streets so they can live there, and later, if they’re successful, they can apply for other housing programs.

Travel to Slovenia for an “Invisible Lublana” Tour

Those who travel to Slovenia through Fairbnb.coop not only have the opportunity to donate to the “Kings of the Street” (50% of the commissions go to a social project) but can also participate in the “Invisible Lublana” tour they offer.

Ljubljana is a green and friendly Central European capital that attracts thousands of travelers every year. As we walk through the city, only the occasional beggar on the street reminds us that Ljubljana also has another, darker face. We might give them a coin or two and then forget about it. But what if a beggar on the street would speak and tell us his story?

Travel to Slovenia

For open-minded people, Kralji Ulice offers a tour where they see Ljubljana through the eyes of the homeless, show places, and tell stories that no other tour could tell. Their guides (Špela, Klavdija, Taubi, and Gašper) have gone through hell on earth, from broken families, violence and alcohol abuse, shelters, sleeping on the streets, (ab)using drugs, begging, petty crime… To new hope. They survived while many of their peers didn’t, and now they can tell their stories. Stories that remind us that we shouldn’t take what we’ve for granted.

Their guides show us places where they slept on the streets, places where they bought and took drugs, and also places where “junkies” and “drunks” hang out and meet. But most importantly, they tell us their stories. Why they believe they’ve fallen so low, the stories of broken families, extreme poverty, violence, and alcohol abuse …

Travel to Slovenia, the only country with love in its heart

Capitalism as a global system creates socially excluded people everywhere, and Ljubljana is no exception. Through the stories of their guides, we learn that the people on the street are no different than you or me, that they just had the bad luck of being born in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that society did too little or nothing to help them get back on their feet when they fell.

with Gašper on an “Invisible Lublana” tour in March 2022.

Invisible Lublana is one of the few opportunities where you can learn about homelessness face to face, where you get an insight into the background, where you learn about the reasons that led a person to the streets and addiction, and where you see how complex the problem of homelessness is and that there are no simple, individual solutions.

At Invisible Lublana, they have no illusions that they can quickly change the majority opinion about homelessness, but they consider every broken prejudice a small victory.

We at Fairbnb believe that their fight is important and this is why we choose this organization to be the first that is supported through donations in Slovenia.
